Tomlinson Lake Hike to Freedom Trail

The Tomlinson Lake Hike to Freedom was North America’s northernmost route of the Underground Railroad. The 3-km (1.8-mi.) trail follows the footsteps of the many Black families who immigrated from Maine to New Brunswick from 1850 to 1865. When walking the trail you will find interpretive storyboards, location signs of Black history relevance, a squatters cabin and a replica of a Black Loyalist pithouse. Every year on the first weekend of October a free event takes place to remember this history.

It is home to 420 hemlock trees that are more than 400 years old and a number of endangered, threatened and rare species. Winter features include an outdoor rink, sliding hill and cross-country ski trails.

Smokehouse Museum

Cap-Acadie is North America's largest exporter of smoked herring. Inside the Information Centre, the Smokehouse Museum demonstrates the history and techniques learned from French and Aboriginal knowledge. Interpretive panels, photographs, and old tools illustrate this traditional way to preserve a family's food supply, which later became a major commercial enterprise. Today about 20 smokehouses in Cap-Acadie still smoke herring, exported mainly to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Boultenhouse Heritage Centre

New Brunswick boasts a strong shipbuilding tradition. Visitors to Sackville can explore this aspect of the province's industrial past at Boultenhouse Heritage Centre, named after the town's most prolific shipwright, Christopher Boultenhouse. The centre consists of three buildings — a Georgian style house built by the Bulmer family circa 1790, a house built in the Greek revival style in 1840 by Boultenhouse, and the Anderson Octagonal House circa 1855.

Big Salmon River No. 1 (Footbridge)

Built in 1974, this footbridge is 84 m (275 ft.) in length. Driving Directions: Route 1, Exit 137A-B, Route 111 East (39.2 km/24.3 mi.) to St. Martins, to Main Street (2.3 km/1.4 mi.), onto Bayview Road and cross the covered bridge. Continue on Big Salmon River Road and follow signs for the Fundy Trail Provincial Park (access fee, open May to October). The footbridge is located at Big Salmon River in the park, 10 km (6 mi.) from the entrance gate.

The only Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame and museum in the Maritime Provinces is a modern and accessible building which opened October 16, 2009. The museum houses all types of motor vehicles, including race cars, antique vehicles, motorcycles, go-carts, snowmobiles, and more. Each year, some of those who have made outstanding contribution to Maritime motorsports history are inducted into the Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is held annually in November.
