Johnson’s Mills Shorebird Reserve and Interpretive Centre

Johnson's Mills is a critical feeding and resting site for the shorebirds that fly through the Bay of Fundy on their fall migration. Approximately half of the world's population of semipalmated sandpipers feed on the mudflats during peak migration (mid August). The best time to see the birds is two hours before, to two hours after high tide. Managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Johnson's Mills Shorebird Interpretive Centre is located 8 km (5 mi.) from the Village of Dorchester.

After crossing several working farms near Midgic, the trail then passes through an isolated stretch of boreal forest, before emerging at Route 16 near the community of Baie Verte.

Oak Point Lighthouse

In a province known for its scenic lighthouses, the Oak Point Lighthouse stands out. Built in 1869, this tower is the highest light on the beautiful St. John River. At 14.6 m (48 ft.) high, for years it stood guard over the sometimes-treacherous waters of this magnificent river. Modern navigational tools mean this original, wooden, salt-shaker-style tower is no longer in use. Although the light has been removed, the Oak Point Lighthouse remains as a beacon from the past. Located just minutes away is Evandale, home of a historic riverboat hotel.

Tidal Bore

Caused by the Bay of Fundy tides, the Tidal Bore occurs twice daily. Watch the water in the Petitcodiac River roll back upstream in one wave that can go up to 60 cm in height! Estimated Tidal Bore times online and at the Visitor Information Centre beside Bore Park, downtown Moncton. Please note: Many factors may affect the time of the Bore by 15 to 20 minutes before or after the scheduled arrival time. Arrive early!
