Middle Island Irish Historical Park

PROVINCIAL HERITAGE PLACE Middle Island, on the Miramichi River, was a quarantine station in the 19th century, specifically for Irish immigrants fleeing the Irish Potato Famine. Many perished while on the Island. In 1873 it was declared a permanent quarantine station by the Federal Government until 1948. Interpretive signage showcasing the park as the city's first water supply is installed along a multi-use trail accessible for walkers, joggers, wheelchairs and cycling. A feeding station maintained year-round attracts many species: chickadees, nuthatches, yellow finches, purple finches, hairy and downy woodpeckers, and doves.

The Sureau Blanc Cross Country Ski Club started in 1980 in a small cabin in the woods. It now has a lodge with heat, power and kitchenette, 13 km (8 mi.) of cross-country ski trails and snowshoe trails. This very active and dynamic club is managed by a committee of volunteers. Their goal: getting people to enjoy winter by offering quality trails, interesting programs and fun activities. The club takes part yearly in many regional, provincial and national competitions and events.
