Just outside of Fredericton's downtown core, you can find Hyla Park Nature Preserve—Canada's first amphibian sanctuary and a hidden urban gem.After the uncommon gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) was discovered in this area, the land was set aside to preserve and protect its population and habitat. Visit the park and listen to the flute-like trilling sound of this tiny frog. Also, keep a lookout for the busy beavers, migratory birds, and rare plants that can be found in the park, including red milkwort, purple gerardia and small-flowered gratiola.

Johnson’s Mills Shorebird Reserve and Interpretive Centre

Johnson's Mills is a critical feeding and resting site for the shorebirds that fly through the Bay of Fundy on their fall migration. Approximately half of the world's population of semipalmated sandpipers feed on the mudflats during peak migration (mid August). The best time to see the birds is two hours before, to two hours after high tide. Managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Johnson's Mills Shorebird Interpretive Centre is located 8 km (5 mi.) from the Village of Dorchester.

The Kahoutek Ski Club maintains more than 20 km (12.5 mi.) of groomed cross-country ski trails open to club members and visitors. Trails allow for both classic and freestyle cross-country skiing. Snowshoers will also find several kilometres (miles) of trail for their enjoyment. All trails begin at the community centre located in the back of the E. and P. Sénéchal Center.

This 54,000-tap operation presents a video on the history of syrup making and has taffy-on-the-snow available. Maple syrup, jelly, lollypops, maple butter, granulated sugar, maple candy, maple-peanut spread, chocolate-covered candy and gift trays are available for purchase. Hours of operation can be extended by appointment and school tours are also available. All you-can-eat breakfasts are served in March and April Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
