Driving directions: Route 1, Exit 56, onto Route 172 to Letete. Take the toll-free ferry to Deer Island onto Route 772.

Cape Enrage Light Station

This lighthouse was built in 1838 atop 46-m (150-ft.) cliffs. It is still in use today, sounding the foghorn and beaming light into the Bay of Fundy. Today, the station is operated and maintained by the Cape Enrage Interpretive Centre. Wolastoq Park

Wolastoq means "the beautiful river," in the language of the Maliseet people who lived beside it. Today, we know it as the beautiful Saint John River. For many centuries before Europeans arrived, Wolastoq, with its tributaries, lands and forests, provided an abundance of food, materials and medicines to the Maliseet people. They were known then as the "Wolastoqiyik," meaning "people of the beautiful river." It provided them with a transportation route for hunting, trade and travel. Today, a park has been developed for recreational and educational purposes.

Cape Enrage Beach

The Cape Enrage Fossil Beach is more than 7 km (4 mi.) long. It traces its way along the base of the 46-m (150-ft.) cliffs of Barn Marsh Island. It runs from the sandy shores of Barn Marsh Beach, which is just off Cape Enrage road, around the lighthouse point, across the ocean floor and out to Brae Beach, an ancient Acadian dyke. You can spend hours walking this tidal beach, hunting for fossils in the rock shale of this rough terrain. Make sure to check the tide table before venturing too far, and plan to be off the beach two hours before high tide.

If you're looking for a hiking challenge and breathtaking Bay of Fundy views, make your way to the Clark Gregory Nature Preserve on Deer Island, which can be accessed by way of the free ferry from L'Etete, near the Town of St. George. The Clark Gregory Nature Preserve has two parcels of land at Chocolate Cove area of the island—the northern and southern headlands. The northern headland trail offers trail systems that take you through diverse forest and the southern headland trail offers views of the active fishing wharf in Chocolate Cove and provides a perfect spot for a picnic.

Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE **The martello tower is currently undergoing vital restoration work. Although visitors are not able to enter the tower during this time, we encourage them to explore and enjoy the grounds and the Visitor Centre.** Built for the War of 1812, this circular stone fort played a crucial role in the defence of Saint John and its harbour until 1944. The tower's unique architecture spans 130 years of coastal defence technology.
