The Loyalist House

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE Loyalist House was constructed from 1811 to 1817 by David Daniel Merrit, a Loyalist from Rye, New York. The oldest building in the city of Saint John, it survived the Great Fire of 1877 due to servants surrounding it with wet towels. The Merrit family continuously occupied it for nearly 150 years, and in 1959 it was acquired by the New Brunswick Historical Society.

Agricultural Museum of New Brunswick

The museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage of our province's agricultural industry and rural life. Its collection includes hundreds of artifacts dating from the 18th century to the mid-1970s. The museum is open to the public in July and August and hold yearly special events such as the Antique Power Show on May long weekend, a Fibre Social on the 2nd Wednesday in July and Harvest Day the 4th Saturday in September. Private tours between mid-June and mid-October by request.

Up to 54 species of birds have been observed at the Beresford Beach Park, and the salt marsh features the rare Maritime Ringlet Butterfly, a small butterfly that lives almost exclusively in the salt marshes in and around the Chaleur Bay from the end of July to mid August. In fact, this butterfly has an extremely small global distribution and its largest population is located right here in the Beresford salt marshes. See if you can spot one! The park also features an unsupervised saltwater beach with washrooms, picnic tables, canteen, a park, toys for children and an outdoor stage.

Visitors to Sackville can explore this aspect of the province's industrial past at Boultenhouse Heritage Centre, named after the town's most prolific shipwright, Christopher Boultenhouse. The centre consists of three buildings — a Georgian style house built by the Bulmer family circa 1790, a house built in the Greek revival style in 1840 by Boultenhouse, and the Anderson Octagonal House circa 1855.
