Wilmot Park

Directly across the street from Government House is Wilmot Park. Beautifully landscaped, the park boasts immaculate lawns, walking trails, lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, lawn bowling, a bandstand, a children’s playground, a new outdoor aquatic facility (anticipated opening late summer 2016), and is a perfect spot for a picnic. The title deed of this 4.9-ha (12-acre) park was originally given to City Council in 1895, by an early Loyalist settler, Edward Wilmot, as a gift for "the commonality of Fredericton."

Wilson's Point Historic Site

Located within Enclosure Park in the community of Derby, Wilson’s Point is the final tip of land at the confluence of the Northwest and Southwest Miramichi rivers. It is the site of the first English Settlement along the Miramichi River, with an interpretive centre housed in the replica of the 1790 church, a trading post, a historic 240-year-old graveyard, and walking trails. It is now cared for by the Miramichi Scottish Heritage Association. Visitors are welcome to tour the buildings and enjoy the beautiful grounds.

Wolastoq Park

Wolastoq means "the beautiful river," in the language of the Maliseet people who lived beside it. Today, we know it as the beautiful Saint John River. For many centuries before Europeans arrived, Wolastoq, with its tributaries, lands and forests, provided an abundance of food, materials and medicines to the Maliseet people. They were known then as the "Wolastoqiyik," meaning "people of the beautiful river." It provided them with a transportation route for hunting, trade and travel. Today, a park has been developed for recreational and educational purposes.

World's Largest Axe

Nackawic
Take seven tonnes of stainless steel and sink them into a concrete stump that is 10 m (33 ft.) in diameter. What have you got? The World's Largest Axe! Rising 15 m (49 ft.) above the glorious Saint John River, this landmark is a mighty symbol. It tells the world that forestry is "number one" in this small community, named Forestry Capital of Canada in 1991. In fact, the axe was commissioned as a reminder of that special year. It was designed and built by a company from Woodstock, New Brunswick. Once built, it was quite a feat to move the statue down to Nackawic.
